said, the timeline of the scandal, who got notified and when, is now under the microscope. cnn intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly has more on that. >> reporter: according to a friend of petraeus, the affair began in november last year, two months after the retired general took the helm at the cia. that same friend also reports that meetings between the two were infrequent, but at some point, petraeus and broadwell began communicating via personal e-mail accounts. e-mails that a government official describes as explicit. skip ahead to may of this year. that's about the time a government official says broadwell began sending threatening e-mails to jill kelley, described as a family friend of petraeus, who lives in tampa, warning her to stay away. that official tells us that kelley shared her concerns over the threatening nature of the e-mails with a friend of the fbi, and that prompted an investigation. sometime after petraeus became aware of the e-mails, a government official says petraeus told broadwell to stop sending them. and sometime around july, according to the frie

admitting he an extramarital affair. they confirm to cnn that the investigators have been exploring tips on an affair with paula broadwell, his biographer. they tried to see if there was a potential security risk, in other words to see if petraeus could possibly be black mailed. petraeus is a highly respected, retired four-star general who commanded forces in both iraq and afghanistan. he was sworn in to run the cia a little over a year ago with vice president biden with his wife holly at his side. that was the swearing in. they've been married 35 years, have two grown kids. so how will this revelation exact the u.s. intelligence community? joining me now is fran townsend and bob baer and suzanne kelly. suzanne, what more can you tell us about the probe into the relationship with paula broadwell? do we know how long this has been going on? >> we don't know how long it was going on, but just the -- so they're the ones that would look into accusations of inappropriate access to classified information. individuals that hold clearances, are they doing what they need to be doing to make sure

"ac 360" starts now. and a day of dramatic developments on both sides of the border in gaza and the gaza strip and throughout israel. a lot of talk about cooling down, about a potential cease-fire. we have seen things heat up. it is very hot, indeed. a short time ago, several hours ago, many explosions just in the area behind me. i'll show you the videotape. no audio, so i'll talk over it. we didn't realize what was about to occur and we weren't recording sound during it. but a very loud blast as you see right there, basically all of us ducked down in the office. we thought that was the end of it. and our cameraman panned over. and a series of more explosions. it turns out this was a number of government buildings that is what is said to have been hit. it's not clear if those are secondary explosions or if those are multiple rockets going into the building. then started pointing out, it was not over. at that point you can hear the sound. let's listen in now. whoa. that's just the sound in

of the building here. despite talk of cease-fire, it appears that the guns are still firing. >> cnn's ben wedeman during a live report. we rushed to the scene of the blast moments later. i'm told this house, this villa, belongs to a very wealthy man who is a member of fatah, who is not here. a wealthy banker and some local people here believe maybe somebody else was living in the house or maybe hamas had taken over the house and that's why it was a target. a number of ambulances have arrived on the scene. it is just not clear if there was anybody inside the house at the time. earlier on the streets of gaza, we witnessed this. a number of men on motorcycles dragging what is clearly the body of a dead man. they were yelling god is great and claiming the man was a collaborator with israel. also on the streets of gaza city, israeli forces dropped leaflets telling residents to flee the area. again, leaflets dropped over gaza city, warning them to stay stay away from installations where hamas is. this is typical of the leaflets, basically telling people to move away from any place they see hamas member
